FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why Should Students be Tutored?

There are many reasons why parents should have their child/children tutored. Here are some of these:

1. Children may not understand a concept the first time it was taught because they were not mentally ready, or because they were tired, bored, absent, or were not interested at the time. Since the understanding of some concepts depend on the knowledge of previous concepts your child could remain disadvantaged until they learn the concept.

2. Some children learn differently or at their own rate, and may require a smaller group to excel.

3. Many students find it difficult to focus in a larger or even medium group setting.   The parents may not even be aware of this because children are so different at home.

4. Some children may just require a little bit of help here and a little bit of help there. However they may be too shy or embarrassed to ask, or they may be a "nice" person who does not want to bother the teacher who seem to be already stressed by other students. They may also be afraid to ask questions. Regardless of the reason the child may not fully appreciate the potentially permanent consequences of not seeking and getting help.

5. Large or even medium class sizes may not be conducive to learning to many students.

Some student’s mind wander so easily that they require a closer contact and academic involvement with their teacher to remain focused.

6. A few students need years of support to be functioning at a level as their peers. This is a fact of life.

7. A number of parents send their children for tutoring to keep them busy so they would not waste time and they would stay out of trouble. They prefer their kids be kept busy with school work rather than watch television, interact with video games, play on the computer, talk on the telephone, or go to the malls with friends. Their motive may seem amusing but research suggests that this strategy works.

8. Many parents send their children for tutoring because they believe that their child should perform at  their highest possible potential regardless of what happens in school.

9. The child is in danger of failing.

10. Some parents understand the benefits of tutoring and extra education. Did you know research indicates that the more education a person receives the less likely they will become the victim of a violent crime?

Are You Like Kumon?

Definitely not! (We are not criticizing their program). It has it's advantages.) Kumon emphasizes computation skills and children can complete the work in 10 minutes, and go home. They accommodate many students in one hour. We emphasize the basics, The Ontario Curriculum, penmanship and writing improvement, improving focus and concentration, memory training to retain concepts and socially appropriate behaviours. There are on average five scholars per teacher so each child is helped individually many times during the sessions. Scholars work for the full hour.

How do I know my child will improve?

At Scholars Academy we are committed to ensuring that all children demonstrate improvement. Scholars will be tested when they enter the Academy, and after they have attended for one full year. If there is no improvement 100% of fees paid will be refunded. This is a one time offer that expires at the end of the first year. This guarantee is not offered to high school scholars because there are too many variables involved in their improvement.

We know that scholars will improve because of the way we teach. When scholars are exposed to new concepts, definitions and formulas, they must learn them by rote. They are told to memorize the concepts, definitions and formulas for the next session. Teachers test scholars on these during the next session. This method is important in teaching because it helps scholars to retain the concepts that they have learned. Many time scholars follow the teacher’s instructions to complete assignments only to forget how to do them in a few week’s time. Memorization of concepts ensure that they will be placed in the scholar’s long term memory and retained for years to come. For example scholars who learn the timetables will retain them forever and would not have to think deeply when drilled on these. Those who did not learn them properly will be continually struggling and would resort to the calculator for simple computations.

The way we teach scholars to write neatly, structure the work on the page by writing out the date completely, skipping a line, writing the heading, skipping a line, writing out the instructions and the page number before they begin to work ensure that they will improve. It also teaches them a way to improve their work in other subjects as well. The ultimate complement to us is when parents inform us that their child’s report card also show improvement in subjects that we do not teach!

Is it One on One? My Child Needs One on One

Our tutoring is the same in effect as one on one because scholars are tutored individually at their specific pace. Each scholar gets as much attention as is necessary to help him or her understand, work with, and learn the concepts taught. There is an average of five scholars per teacher so scholars get lots of attention.

In one on one tutoring you pay for moments when the child is actually working- which they must do at some point. Our teachers help your child when other scholars are working. This enables us to charge you less, because we pass on the savings to you, and still give you practically the same quality time as one on one. We also have a very sound program. Don’t forget the money back guarantee. We are so confident that your child will improve that we offer a money back guarantee.

We Know that we can Help your Child

If you believe our program can help your child call us at (416) 503 0045 or Toll Free: 1 (877) 503-0045 to arrange for a free, no obligation assessment. The evaluation will provide you with information about your child’s academic level in comparison to others at his/her grade level. We can also tell you if your child is affected by issues such as difficulty focusing or a lack of pre-requisite skills. We will show you what we can do to help. If your child is an underachiever or is above average we can also tell you what we can do for your child.
